An applicant does not have a SSN, but they can provide an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Can they apply?

Our Compliance Team recommends that you contact your legal counsel or legal advisor for further information on this topic.

The SSN is recommended in order to run the most complete and thorough background check available. Using the SSN, we are able to run a SSN Trace check which provides the applicant's address history. We use these addresses when conducting additional county criminal checks.

Turn will be able to conduct a national criminal check based on the name and date of birth provided by the applicant's government-issued ID. However, without a SSN, we are only able to run a county criminal check based on the applicant's current address, since their address history will be unavailable.

Again, we encourage you to defer to your legal counsel or legal advisor for more information.

This response is specific to background checks conducted for applicants in the United States, and does not apply to those in Canada.
